Boundaries and agreement before getting closer
Make room for a clear yes, no or pause in dating and intimacy.
Agreement concerns something specific
Accepting a date is not accepting a kiss, a photograph or sex. Ask and listen before taking another step. Silence or lack of resistance is not a substitute for agreement. If you are unsure what someone wants, stop and clarify; uncertainty does not have to become a test of interest.
Make changing one's mind straightforward
Either person may want to stop, even after expressing enthusiasm. Respond without blame, pressure or persistent negotiation. You can say, ‘That's fine, we can stop here’. What someone agreed to on another occasion does not determine what they want now. A comfortable connection leaves room to reconsider.
Include everyday boundaries
Boundaries also concern timing, jokes, photographs and message frequency. Explain what works for you in concrete terms. If your preferences do not fit together, acknowledging that respectfully is better than trying to make someone abandon a boundary to preserve the relationship. Agreement is something you establish together.
