Personal privacy when meeting online
Choose what to share and respect a potential partner's personal information.
Share information gradually
A nickname and a few interests can be enough to begin. Think before sharing your phone number, address, daily routine or personal accounts. Each person decides what to reveal and when. Trust takes time; you do not have to demonstrate interest by handing over details or pictures you would rather keep private.
Ask before sharing with others
A conversation, photograph or someone's trans identity does not become public information because they shared it with you. Do not forward messages or post screenshots without agreement. Discuss social tags and date photos too: you may have different expectations about being visible to others.
State boundaries you can maintain
You can say, ‘I would rather keep chatting here for now’ or ‘Please do not share this photo’. Respect a similar request from the other person. A promise of privacy cannot remove every risk of sending digital information, so only share material you feel comfortable sharing.
